Bathroom Renovation - Wall Mural
Project type
Wall Mural
Date
2023
Location
Lantau Island, Hong Kong
This bathroom renovation is part of a village house set high in the hills of Mui Wo, occupying the last home on the slope and surrounded by dense, lush jungle. With a large window opening directly onto layered tropical foliage, the brief was to extend the feeling of being immersed in nature from the exterior into the interior space.
A soft palette of greens and warm cream tones was used throughout the bathroom to echo the colours of the surrounding landscape and create a calm, restorative atmosphere. The mural was conceived as a subtle continuation of the view outside, rather than a competing feature.
Interestingly, the one place in the bathroom without a direct outlook to the jungle is when seated on the toilet. To address this, the wall opposite and adjacent to the sink was selected as a feature wall, painted with abstracted foliage forms. This placement ensures that even in this most enclosed moment, the user remains visually connected to nature.
The mural acts as a quiet intervention — enhancing the spatial experience, softening the interior, and reinforcing the relationship between the home and its setting. The result is a bathroom that feels grounded, serene, and deeply connected to its hillside environment.
